I just got a really nice copy of the Canopy Club show and was sort of simultaneously playing around with aimster. I searched DNB and there is really only one tune on there at this point. So is it Copascetic to upload a show to Aimster??? Sorry I haven't really checked out the taper guidelines .. If someone wants to give me the heads up that'd be grat. thanx

Phil, I got to thinking about a DNB show earlier this year where only a half dozen people were in the room as David and the Boys picked up their instuments and started to play. I found myself frustrated and dissappointed in the people of Humboldt County. Why don't they come out in droves to hear these guys and what the hell is a drove anyway?!?! Well, my frustrations were soon abated when I realized that the few of us in the room were hearing only a sound-check of Diamond Joe and the "real" show wasn't going to take place for another 1/2 hour or so. As Dylan sings on New Morning "time passes slowly when you're lost in a dream." Thank God for dreams. By the way, anyone know how Billy is doing. Our thoughts went out to him yesterday during Yom Kipper services. "May the Source of Peace, bring peace to all who are bereaved." Later,

The turnout for L Rowan trio reminds me of several years ago, we went to a little club in Chicago to see Hamilton Pool, a 3 piece folk group featuring Iain Matthews. Iain comes here even less often than DNB IF THAT IS POSSIBLE(!), but suffice it to say, it was the night of a Bulls playoff game. The bar part of the club was absolutely packed with people watching the game. The music room had 3 tables of people, about 8 altogether. Before the show started, Michael Fracasso of the band went to each table and introduced himself. There's something very eery about seeing someone play and when they look out at you, you know that they are looking at and singing at you!

Ah, Lorin should be used to empty rooms by now (not that he deserves to play to invisible audiences). I remember a Rowan Brothers (all three of them) gig at a club in Vallejo, years ago, when the only people in there were myself and my friend, Lyn, and WE were on the guest list. Needless to say, a fight broke out backstage and we all got to listen to the various arguments for and against going on. To their credit, they went on and were, of course, excellent. What the hell is wrong with people in Vallejo, anyway?

Lorin Rowan Trio sounded great last Thursday night at Six Rivers, Eureka. However, I felt bad for the band as there were only 3 people (including me and my dad) there for the second set. There were a few others in the bar during the first set, but not there to see the band. Barry said that DNB might be back around Halloween. Looks like maybe the weekend after? Did anyone get a tape from Roll on the Mattole? I would love to hear that again!! Barry said the band's tape has no Billy in it!

Details about Section 8?!?! Mizshely? Sounds like they might have been a "crazy" group of musician's. But, isn't that redundant? Phil, I agree with you about Haunted Man. Though I have a memory of Mookie playing it in concert, it's not on any of the Humboldt County,CA set lists ("if my memory serves me well"...not!) It's such an emotional song that probably requires Mookie to sing from way deep down in his soul in a very draining way. Could be a place he doesn't want to go during a show. I'd love to hear it (again?) in concert. Regarding mis-heard lyrics; I used to think Mookie was singing about the "high-road halls" of his mind in Haunted Man (which might be those places where we think we're doing the right thing). Of course, the real lyric is about those "harrowed halls" which are more much dark and distressing. Probably a whole lot easier to sing "This Little Light of Mine" or "All You Need is Love" than a chillingly beautiful song like "Haunted Man." Whadayuthink,

Don't know too much about Mookie, but he played with Buddy Cage and Solar Circus on at least one album and he's played with Ratdog. Mookie and Barry also make great contributions on Kingfish's album "Sundown on the Forest." On Prof Louie & The Crowmatix' album "Over the Edge", Mookie and Barry sit in on a great cover of Scarlet Begonias.

I first heard that Lorin Rowan was coming to town on Thursday night sometime on Thursday afternoon. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to pull it together quick enough to see the show. My loss, I'm sure. I heard that Master Guitarist Sless was part of the trio and Doug Harman was on cello. When I saw this same group last time, they were absolutely wonderful. My guess is that they were even better this time. Now, I'm really starting to feel bad that I missed it. Oh well, maybe next time. Haven't listened to the radio much lately. Hope all is well with y'all. See you soon,

Stampede56; Hope you had a comfortable, peaceful sleep. May you have many, many more. For me, all the news this week resulted in overload. Consequently, the kids & I watched StarWarsEpisode1 yesterday and gained wisdom from our little green friend, Yoda. While teaching a Jedi principle to young Anakin Skywalker, Yoda said: "Fear is the path to the Dark Side. Fear leads to Anger. Anger leads to Hate. Hate leads to Suffering." Sounds pretty prophetic in light of the numerous calls from pulpits around the world that this attack was because the "enemy" is the "Devil" and "evil" must be "stamped out". Clearly we're afraid & fear has it's place. But, a re-running of Star Wars (the Movie) on Capital Hill may be more appropriate than a review of the Star Wars Defense Initiative. To paraphrase an old saying: We learn from history that we don't learn much from history. In the words of Bob Dylan, "I think Abraham Lincoln said that." Regards, RD. See you soon on some deserted on-ramp,

Well, gang, as a self-procalimed know-it-all who knows enough to know she doesn't know everything, I suggest we all do two things pertaining to this recent disaster: 1. write to your representatives and express your feelings and concerns and 2. pray. As the mother of a draft age son, I am doing both. It really scares me that Cheney seems to be issuing orders (couched as "suggestions") to Shrub, and that the perceived public policy is war for the sake of revenge. And now, back to my astro-physics homework. That recently returned student,

By MY faulty logic, PECT is a verb. Therefore, if you can pect, you can RE-pect and you can DIS-pect. Obviously, you can also UN-pect. IM-pect, and of course, EX-pect. But DIS-RE-PECT??? That's one for Pete Richardson's book on Style. As for THEN and THAN -- THEN is an adverb that refers to a particular time, eg., "Prices were lower then." It is also an adjective meaning "existing at the time indicated" as in "the THEN prime minister." Finally, THEN can be a noun meaning "that time." THAN, on the other hand, is a conjunctive which is used after comparative adjectives. Hope this clears up the mystery!

Recently, I got a fortune cookie that read: "An angry man opens his mouth instead of his ears and eyes." At the time, I was thinking the fortune was just for me. Now, I understand that others can benefit from its wisdom. It seems a joking self-reference to "knowing it all" need not precipate disrepect, particularly under the cloak of annonymity. But, isn't our ability to express our thoughts one of the things that makes America a great place to live?

Hey Sam, sounds like we missed a heckava show, eh? Thanks to RD and Phil for the deeetailed deeescriptions. Seems to me DNB rarely has a bad show. I know I've never seen one from these guys & I've seen lots of show - good and bad. The first bad one that comes to mind was a David Crosby gig at the height of his downfall. Though socially it was incredible, musically is was bereft. And, we all know the Grateful Dead are famous for having occasional bad shows. DNB, however, seems to pull it together pretty quickly to get past rough moments (usually pretty early in a show) and then just keeps on playing at musically high levels for the remainder of the night. I remember a BB posting sometime ago from a guy who thought DNB sucked (following a show in Arizona or some other place where it gets hot). I think it was Zion who then commented that all bands like great actors or athletes sometimes have a bad day. Well, here's to bad days. May they be few, far between & at least partly fun. Hoping for a good day today,
Joe

Yes, Tricia, I remember those Nudie suits! I always liked David's the best, too! But I think the person below was referring to a John Travolta style disco suit. Stayin' Alive... somebody HAS to be kidding, right? Cover tunes are one thing, but doing a large section of the repertoire as 70s lounge band would be really awful. So guys, you might as well give in and play something with merit such as "Sorry Cecilia." And come to think of it, when I go to Santa Cruz today (yet again) I'm going to steal one of those street signs that says "Share the road..."

OK, so I'll expand one tiny bit on RD's comments. The BIODTL encore bore very little resemblance to the Dead's versions, which is a big plus. It was done ala Mookie, in a jazzy ragtime like kind of style. At first, I thought it was going to be Such a Night. Mookie was great last nite. At times, his piano sounded classical, at other times it sounded like Chico Marx, but it always was right on (as was everyone's not surprisingly).

The Canopy Club gig was great, from beginning to end. It was great meeting Fido and family as well as Craig from Co. The band was on fire all night and played a real generous 2 sets. I can't expand too much on RD's comments, but wow, it was fun. The sound was just exactly perfect as was the playing by everyone. Outstanding versions of EVERYTHING. More smiles for me at this show than any other this year! Love this band!

Well ain’t that a kick in the head? From the opening space into LONG GONE SAM at the Canopy Club, an old movie theater, these guys started out jammin’ hard. There was hardly a song all night that didn’t have an extended jam, a very magical experience, best ever! FILM @ 11 continued the rockin, another great jam, the p.a. so sweet that with the slightly sloped dance floor left over from the movie theater days I could adjust the EQ to my liking by moving backward or forward a few inches! Some heady drumming by Joe and great harmonies by the Mook man on the next one, JOHN HARDY’S WEDDING.

Another long jam on ANY NAKED EYE, and Seigals harmonies (again) and Sless’s searing guitar on KEROUAC were right on. Barry and Mookie showed they came to play! They were on all night, as evidenced on the full out orchestral jam on FABLE. David’s acoustic came out to end the set with a tight FREIGHT TRAIN BOOGIE followed by everyone singing along to CUMBERLAND BLUES.

About the middle of Cumberland I was getting kinda worried that they couldn’t keep this pace up all night, maybe I missed something and they were only going to do one set, they were cooking so long. But when David announced the break I sighed with relief.

ABSOLUTELY SWEET MARIE opened the 2nd set, me still sitting back at a table getting an opportunity to check out the trippy effects and tight editing on the 2 big video monitors that added to the unique atmosphere. Warmed back up, A DIFFERENT WORLD took me to a different place, the players taking time to explore this one, really great. The LOVE MEDLEY wasn’t one of my favorites until last night, these guys took THIS cover and made it DNB’s! It was if it was now expected that every song be a show stopper, un f******believable!

EDGE OF THE WIRE was next, and somebody had opened up that can of Kitty-whatever way earlier in the evening. THE WHEEL and KICK IN THE HEAD ended the show, with Proffessor Seigal taking a solo on Kick that took ‘em to church! A recording of this show is worth having for that solo alone. Also some tasty trading off between Mookie and Barry on this one. The encore, B.I.O.D.T.L. made me think about beatin’ it on down the line chasing after these guys to Wisconsin! You cheeseheads are in for a real treat if they can tap into last night’s energy.

2nd set: PANAMA, LLE, LONESOME HIGHWAY, SARASOTASTEAMBOAT, then the 2nd extended jam, WIZARDS SON, with David doing some jazzy rythm that made the song, a sweat wipin jam, into an energetic CRYIN, another crowd pleaser, back into WIZARD'S, going full tilt boogie to end the show, except the crowd wouldn't hear of it, with foot stomping rythmic applause bringing the band back for "An old Mexican Lullabye (!Hey now Trish!), Los Flores Muertos." Can't wait for tomorrow.

Good show at Moe's in Springfield tonight.LONESOME L.A., ROCKY ROAD, with everybody strugglin' to find the sound on stage and gettin' the fingers warmed up.WAY OF THE WIND was a great song choice, (after a quick lesson to Joe from Bill to get the song started)with the groove starting to form and time to relax and get comfy with the room. LGS, Bill tweaks his amp and gets alot of tactical bass bombs, really feelin it in the solar plexus. This was the 1st extended jam of the night, with the trippin' calliope sound from Mookie makin it space o-u-t nicely, into Barry leading the band into a wicked WICKED MESSENGER, everybody dancin' by now. A definite crowd pleaser with Joe finding his muse on this one.WARRIORS PATH, with crystal clear vocals from the home town hero, with an amazing almost vacuum like upbeat with the rythm section working tightly together.CONTRACT with some nice steel by Barry.

Part II -- Speaking of the Grateful Dead, any discussion within DNB about using 2 drummers again? I know it's an expensive undertaking but the thought of DNB using a drummer duo gets my rhythm spirits pumping. For what it's worth (and perhaps to fuel additional debate), Chirco's been able to charge up my rhythm spirits all by himself. Not only can he lay back and set a nice groove, he can also play the drums like it's a lead instrument. But that's only my humble opinion. Hope those who're seeing the shows in the midwest will bless us with reviews. Regards D&J. Just passin' time in Humboldt County,

Part 1 -- Big Mark; Maybe Uncle John in Willits can set the boys up in his woodshed for awhile. You made a great point before when you wrote that a band needs to spend time together to get the creative juices flowing. Last night, I was reading about the Dead "woodshedding" in Rio Nido during the summer of '67. They were working on "Dark Star" and Robert Hunter said he "just started writing words for it." It was at that point that "it became obvious to (everybody in the band) that the collaboration (between Garcia & Hunter) was going to work." How's that for an understatement?!?!

Well, Rusty plays a lot of instruments, and quite well, but I have never seen him play bass. Usually, when he is with (take your choice of name here) "Not Necessarily the New Riders" or "Rusty's Riders" he plays rhythm guitar and sings and sometimes plays slide guitar and fiddle. Not bad, just NOT the New Riders. And nobody will ever get me to admit anything to the contrary, either! And that's the truth

When the next DNB original song will be released? Hey Fido, have a good time at the show(s). One of my favorite Beatle songs is Ringo's cover of Act Naturally. Speaking of covers, I just finished listening to DNB's 7/01 at Six Rivers. Must admit that for quite awhile, I misheard a lyric within their cover of "Just A Season". Much to my chagrin, I used to think that David was singing that he "loved" the Gambler with his "face" instead of "bluffed him". Geez, it definately puts a different spin on the reason for buying "drinks for everybody in the place" doesn't it!?!?! Hey Mark, good luck getting a house for the boys. Hey Zion, how was Laytonville? Well,we do need to remember also that these guys are playing the same songs night after night, stuff gets stale.
say the same word over enough times you forget what the heck it means. So it also helps mix stuff up for them.
Then there is the fact that Joe is drumming right now and that means they are playing material they had tapes of, for him to study.I would imagine now that they have had a little time together we will see some other stuff.Reality is the band doesn't get the oppurtunity to "woodshed" enough.Where they can hold up and mix perspiration with inspiration. So if anybody has a large house empty for a couple of weeks in the near future let me know.preferably west coast, secluded and relatively easy to load in equipment,And good power source.LHCB

Hey Zion, live from Kentfield, I am reporting that the NRPS show at Rancho Nicasio is not really the New Riders at all but the unreasonable facsimile band led by Rusty Gauthier. Hey Tim; hope your daughter's feeling better. Ouch. Tricia, et al, love the family stories. Saw John Hammond on his "Wicked Grin Tour" last night at Cafe Tomo in Arcata. Great show though pretty short at just over an hour (maybe an hour,15 minutes). He was backed on stand-up bass by Larry Taylor (Canned Heat,Tom Waits'Band), Augie Meyers (Sir Douglas Quintet, Texas Tornados) on keyboards/accordian!!!, Stephan Hodges on drums/percussion & session man Frank Carillo (Peter Frampton) on hollow-body electric. The opening act was Christina Fernandez & Errol Previde of the Errol Previde Quartet. Very sultry blues. If you get a chance to see this tour, it's worth it. They're in the SF Bay area & Seattle next week and the mid-west and east in 9/01 and 10/01. "Heartattack & Vine" and "Gun Street Girl" knocked me out. Could DNB cover a Waits' tune? Probably, but I won't push it, OK, Mizshely?

All this talk about kids' albums/ Sesame Street ... When our kids were small we would take these driving trips into Wisconsin. Along with Rafi & other appropriate musical tapes for the ride, I would always bring a handful of my tapes too, one of which was often a NRPS compilation that I made. It was primarily stuff from the 1st album, Gypsy Cowboy & P. Red but also had some songs from Brujo, the MCA albums + Feeling All Right. Both of my kids, at different points in time, had the same favorite song from the tape: Twenty Good Men. I think it had to do with the pirate imagery or something.

Mizshely; Yes, our strange duck definately quacked and rattled some walls but not with a quake. Those little ducky aftershocks, however, have really been nasty. By the way, almost every time I think of Dylan now, I flash on your encounter with him. Last night, I had the pleasure of listening to a copy of a CD of Dylan's gig at the Illinois State Fair. Thanks Fido. Pretty amazing stuff. Also got a chance to hear part of the DNB Shawnee Cave show. DNB Rules,

Hey Joe, would that have been "a young duck who had a strange quack..." Of course, we have all been known to have strange quakes from time to time, especially in California. "rubber ducky, you're the one, you make bath time lots of fun, rubber ducky, I'm awfully fond of you (vo vo dee oh)...
While others were listening to the d\Dead, I was listening to Bert and Ernie's greatest hits... ah, quack it all, anyway!

So, Phideaux; you goin' to Springfield? Can you pick me up at 8:00? With regard to "DNB: Truckin' Down Sesame Street," my kids chose the following roles for the boys; Billy (Big Bird), Joe (Elmo), Mookie (Ocsar, with no disrespect intended to either of them), Barry (Grover), and David (in a dual role as Cookie Monster/Mr.Snufflupagus). They are now working on lyrics to "Fable of a Rubber One (Homage to a Duck)." "There was once a young duck who had a strange quake. From the front of his bill, to the middle of his crack."(Well, things broke down pretty quickly. The lyrics department is circling out of control. May Day, May Day, May Day!) I'll never be able to hear the lyric "mighty roar" again and not think of this day. Thanks and be well,

Apropos of absolutely nothing, all this talk about Sesame Street reminded me that long ago, in a galaxy far, far away (OK, 31 years ago in Marin County) I gave the late Rex Jackson (namesake of the Rex Foundation) a 45 single of "Rubber Ducky" for his 25th birthday. God only knows why. Mookie has always reminded me of Grover and Charlie, of course, is more than vaguely reminiscent of Oscar. I've been tooling around Sesame Street far too long, I guess - Billy could be Big Bird, Joe could be Elmo,David could be Mr. Snuffleupagus, and Barry would be Bert. Now that I have recast the show, I'll sign off,

David; My "favorite" DNB show seems to be the last one I heard. But, some past shows do shine more brightly than others including the 7/7/99 at Six Rivers Brewery. Starts off with Bill Browning's Dark Hollow & doesn't let up. I heard Shawnee Cave from 4/28/01 was great with Buddy Cage on pedal steel. The show at Roll on the Mattole on 7/21/01 was an absolute knock-out. The 2nd set was one of the best darn jam sets I've ever seen starting with Fable and moving thru a Jam, Fire on the Mnt Instruemental, Out in the Woods and on and on and on including a drum solo that rocked the roof...Bill's vocals on Warrior's Path in that set were so emotionally charged that one couldn't help but sense he was singing from some deep spot within. Takes my breath away just thinking about it. Love to hear about "favorite shows" from others. Sending prayers out for Chesley,

I'd rather hear originals too. If covers they must do, how bout some wierd ones transmuted into the DNB sound. Some that I can think of that I think the guys could morph into a whole different level(isn't that what its about) are Till the End of the Day (Kinks), Bird Dog (Everly Bros), 8 Miles High, We Gotta Get out of this Place, Shine On Brightly (Procol Harum), Jig Saw Puzzle (Stones) & Somebody to Love

When asked recently about any "new material" during an in-studio interview at KHUM, David said some new stuff "is in the works". Hopefully that means a new original song or two sooner than later. Can't wait but I will. In the meantime (versus "nicetime"???), I'm putting the video ("Wires, Hearts and Magic") back into the player. Fun stuff. Phil, you rock.

Phil, I TOTALLY agree with your position on cover songs as pertains to the DNB. They have so much talent that it is a shame to waste it on mediocre covers when their own stuff is so good. Personally, I'd like to see them do "Blow High, Blow Low" (from CAROUSEL)... no, that song belongs to Brett Rickaby.

Re: Covers, I don't know, the Band covers, by themselves don't do too much for me. I loved those early Band albums too, but I just don't think DNB does that much with them, though I enjoy all of the Mookie vocals I've ever heard. I get a much bigger kick out of some of the more obscure covers like the Animals' "Im Cryin'", the Byrds' "Just a Season", Little Feat's "Six Feet of Snow", Neil's "Days that Used to Be","All you Need is Love Medley", "Into the Mystic" & the Riders songs that David didn't originally sing. The Band songs got so much airplay throughout the 70s... Plus, to me, you do a cover as kind of a wierd, fun thing to throw in to grab people by surprise unless you really add your own signature to the song. Most Band songs are too serious to throw in as quirky fun things or too straightforward to make that much more interesting. To me the band(our band) does alot more w/the nonBand covers.

David; Rag Mama Rag is great song, isn't it? It's one of my favorite DNB cover songs. Mookie! Mookie! Mookie! You also know that Jupiter Hollow is a Band tune. Zion's call for Rags & Bones is also a good suggestion. I'm still pushing for a DNB cover (with apologies to Mizshely) of Daniel & the Sacred Harp with David & Mookie doing a call-and-return on the vocals. There's so many places on that song to stretch it out with Barry on electric geetar or pedal steel, Mookie on acordian, etc. etc. etc. Speaking of covers, I was listening to the Who's Odds and Sods last night. It includes Pete Townsend's Naked Eye. Anybody know who wrote DNB's Naked Eye??? Is it an original DN song or a cover tune? Is "Any Naked Eye" listed within the last set-list a different song? Who does those set-lists? Where's Mark? Am I going to keep asking questions? What's the purpose of life? According to Kilgore Trout, it is "to be the eyes and ears and conscience of the Creator of the Universe." Goodbye Blue Monday and back to work,

Far be it from ME to point out an acute perception of the obvious here, but perhaps the DNB could add a lyrics page to the website and eliminate the guesswork ascribed to the task of ascertaining the words to the songs? Still sticking to that "break out a can of kitty litter, you goomba you,"

Hey Zion, Springfield here we come....maybe. Hope you enjoy NL-SC. It's my favorite Band album (though the self-titled Brown Album & The Last Waltz come close). Lots of phenomenal songs on NL-SC. I think "It Makes No Difference" is one of those tear-jerkin' love songs that causes men to crumble and eventually acknowledge how weak we really are in the face of lost love. As for "Rags and Bones", I'd love to see DNB cover it, but I think they'll shy away from doing a 3rd Band tune given their existing repertoire(sp?). But you never know. By the way, can anybody point me to the lyrics/chords for "Fable". Sincerely

Dropped off oldest daughter at college today (U of I)& went to the Canopy Club in Urbana to score tixs for the 9-7 gig. The place was closed so we couldn't get the tix but it struck me that it's no accident that the band is playing at this place. I went to the U of I in the early 70's. At the time, the Canopy Club was the Thunderbird Theater, a small movie theater located in a small mall. Although the space has been taken over & converted, the basic structure (I saw today) is still the same & there are still Thunderbird logos (a DNB like Thunderbird)at various locations within the mall. They replied that it was ten of two. WHAT! The band was starting it's second set at nearly 2:00 AM. I had forgotten it was a private party and not a bar gig. The band began playing the Hunter/Garcia standard Candyman instrumentaly while Mr. Nelson took to the stage. Because of the late hour, I decided to call it a night when I ran into some friends and we began rapping with one another. At about 2:10, we went back into the party. Now, I don't know if it is because most of the band have a few years on me or not, but the rollicking cowboy hipsters of the first set had changed into the archetypical father/boss/disciplinarian role in my perception and I realized I had better leave and get some sleep for work this morning or else. Bummer! I wonder how far into the morning the band played. Anyways, it was a GREAT show. I am completely wiped out, so I won't be able to attend this evening's show, but last night took the cake. Thank you DNB for a real good time!

In between sets, the band hung out with the mellow group of folks lucky enough to attend. I heard David teaching some young heads how to ask for directions to the toilet in Japanese (as well as other teachings!) while the rest of the band enjoyed the lovely Asheville evening. The second set was beginning when I asked a person next to me the time.

The first set was incredible and featured many great tunes including Turtle Dove, Deep Elem Blues, a song I think is called the Sarasota Steamboat Farewell Lead-pipe Cinch and a wonderful Wizard's Son-->Days That Used To Be--->Wizard's Son medley that traveled through many different musical textures as it made it's way down the line. I was exhausted, but the band drove me to get off my feet and dance. Barry Sless's pedal steel work combined with Mookie's accordian created some AMAZING musical spaces. The way they would play off of one another in building the jam was truly masonic in quality and the resulting sound was completely beautiful.

As for the show at Devil's Head, well I don't have a set list or anything, but the drummer, Joe , was terrific. He did a fine job filling in for Charlie! It seemed everyone who was there for the concert was put up in the same building, unless you were camping, so it was fun "running into" the different musicians and fans there. The crowd was not too big during the day, but as night fell, and the DSO came out lots of folks cameout of nowhere. It was a treat to see David, and the guys come back out, along with Vassar, to play such gems as Dark Hollow, Big River and one of my favorite's, Ripple. There were so many musicians on stage it really seemed like an "Orchestra", but where did Billy go??

My son (age 8) ended our camping trip on Sat nite talking about this band. We'd been listening to various DNB tapes thru-out our 4day trip including a rendition of deR amanaP. On the last night, in that quiet, hazy moment before sleep, Trevor says "Hey, Dad, it's really cool David Nelson learned to sing Panama Red backwards, isn't it?." Yeah, it's really cool. The show at Devil's Head was absolutely sweet, Marie! Got chills listening to the DNB play with Vasser. Everyone seemed to be having a great time up on stage, and off for that matter. Was the first time we saw DSO. Have to say we were not that impressed, until... David and the boys and Vasser got back on stage and showed everyone how a Dead tune should really be played! "Ripple" sounded so incredible, Thank you, for a real good time!

Davids band ficken rocks!!!
It way cool to see our veteran's of rock n roll jam'n on stage. Then David Nelson Band got on
stage and blew 'em all away, WHAT A SHOW. If you've never seen this band you're
missing out on something very pleasing to the ear!!! :) Very tight groove,,and a taste of magic
fills the air when they perform!!! The crowd way not to big at this time for DNB,,maybe 400 plus. Anyway,,,when DSO got on
stage with Vince,, the crowd started to fill-in alot better. I don't know what to say but they did
one hellva number from when they started,,,till they ended!!! At one point they had the David
Nelson Band members on stage,,plus Vassar on fiddle, Vince on keys and of coarse DSO,,it
really l@@k't like an ORCHRESTRA up there on stage,,and the crowd was filled with energy
big time!!! This was a happening GETTING ready to hit a brick wall with a KA BANG!!! :) :)
David Nelson Band kicks fricken ass!!!

I was just noticing that if one removes the first line within the letter "N" in Niagra & places it after the "a" in Falls, it reads: "VIAGRA FAILS"...One pill makes you smaller and... By the way, anyone know if Joe Chirco s going to stay with DNB following this tour? If there's going to be a vote...I say "yea". Arthur, Charlie & Joe are all great drummers but Chirco pushes the band more than the others & is one heckava improv drummer. At the "Creek" show after an espcially well performed jam, Billy gave Joe a "high five." If was a DNB moment I'd never seen before. Quite touching. Here's to more touching moments,

Day Saloon in Santa Rosa: Damn good music - a badass band. I
bought a copy of the High Adventure CD. I love it. It is
fast becoming my Road-Therapy disc. Great stuff. Which CD is
it that has "Wheel" on it? I must have that one as well. I
would love to sit in with you guys sometime if that would be
at all possible. Perhaps if you're in Sonoma county again or
maybe if we play some naked-witch festival back east again
or somewhere in between. I did cop my first country licks
from y'all, you know. Which reminds me, I heard something
about NRPS playing at the Sweetwater. Is this true? Please
let me know. I would love to see that gig. I hope to hear
back from back from you soon. (We just got back from a
Colorado etc. tour in which we were delayed in traffic due
to a sniper-attack one day. Made me miss "Sex and the City"

and lastly, two more high points about being on the Creek: An announcment (paraphrased) from the stage in-between Wake the Dead & Ganz: "There's a van in the parking lot with a Grateful Dead sticker on it that needs to be moved." My favorite spot in the DNB show was Mookie's intro to Jupiter Hollow. It was reminiscent of Garth Hudson's Genetic Method & Chest Fever. As Nelson has said of Mookie...that cat can play. Later,

Tim, good update about Ganz. Thanks. David Ganz did a great job with DNB, didn't he? Also, he added some moments of humor to the show. During a lull between "Edge" & "The Wheel," Ganz did a Day Tripper riff. David (Nelson) looked up & asked "Twice in one day?" At first I thought Nelson was referring to tripping. Then, I figured he was talking about doing a second Beatle song because Mookie had just completed "All You Need Is Love Medley". Eventualy, I saw the more obvious connection in light of the fact that Ganz had played Day Tripper during his solo previous set. I also realized again how quick David is (& how slow I can be). A little while later, Ganz was able to refer to a 2nd Beatle title when Nelson forgot lyrics during The Wheel. Ganz filled the blank by calling out "Help!" which coaxed a smile out of David and got a laugh from the crowd.

Jerry's Kids followed David Nelson band and played Midnight Moonlight around midnight. They ended their show of incredible Dead covers near 3:30 a.m...maybe 4ish (but that's really just a guess). We were up again at 8 for breakfast & taped music of Otis Redding. Throughout the days, we swam in a beautifully large pond, shared stories with wonderful friends, ate a garden of delightful foods including a bbq'd salmon to die for & heard great music. Life doesn't get much better. Thanks to Uncle John. Lee, hope you're feeling better. D&J, thanks. There were just so many wonderful people having fun & making memories for years to come. I am pretty sure my comments will be "too long to be acceptable" so I'll post two quick ones & move on: Back to work & very much alive after 25 hours "on the Creek". It was a day filled with timeless moments and an unending celebration of the life & spirit of Jerry Garcia. We couldn't make it to Friday's show. On Sat, Wake the Dead took the stage 'bout noon, were followed by David Ganz who, mid-way through his set, paired with Danny Carnahan of WtD for an exciting duet. DNB took over just as the sun began to dip below the tree-lined hills behind the stage. David was in wearing a basic black t-shirt & jeans ensemble and forgot some lyrics as part as his effort to help us remember JG. As far as Tropical Storm Barry, I just have to close my eyes and feel the incorporeal Garcia before me.

Woody Vermeire, who played fiddle with David Gans's band, joined DNB for quite a few tunes. It was a great addition to the music and he was a solid performer. At one point I noticed David looking over at Woody and just BEAMING! Great show! Get the tapes!!

Click'n the bird brings good news from Dan & Jan. Still delighting in some "music memories" from Roll on the Mattole: Cut-n-Run, near the end of the second set was another highlight for me. It went pretty far out into space connected by threads of harmony & agreement. Then, like the tumblers of the universe falling into place, Bam! The band hit their mark with one note that brought everything back together and opened the door for Earl's Girls to bring us home. Great stuff. It warms my heart just thinking about it. From a friend to y'all: "A.P.7/23/01 LONDON-George Harrison is denying reports that he is near death. The former Beatle issued a statement today saying that he is "active and feeling very well." The 58-year-old musician has been treated for a brain tumor at a clinic in Switzerland, having already had an operation for lung cancer earlier this year. Over the weekend "The Mail on Sunday" -- a British newspaper -- quoted former Beatles producer George Martin as saying that Harrison believes he's lost his battle with cancer and that he expects to die soon...but Martin's own manager denies that the producer made those comments -- or that he even gave an "exclusive" interview, as the newspaper claimed. In today's statement, Harrison & his wife said they are "disappointed & disgusted" by the suggestions he is close to dying. Harrison said the newspaper reports were "unsubstantiated, untrue, insensitive & uncalled for." Sending out more prayers for George and his family,

Hey Dan, got that date wrong, didn't I? Thanks again for the discs. Jan, see ya @ the "Creek"? "Roll on the Mattole" was a wonderful weekend of camping, fun & music. Terrapin Tony Rinauer opened his set with Tangled Up In Blue followed by a variety of GD tunes including Dupree's Diamond Blues, Franklin's Tower & One More Saturday Night. Watch for this guy. At 13 y.o.,he's going to be around for awhile. Around 10:00, DNB came on. Lots of highlights. My favorites - a drum solo by Joe Chirco of epic proportions & an equally epic lyric-less "Fire on the Mountain" jam that weaved in & out of 1-2 songs that I remembered yesterday but now seem to have lost in a haze of memories, camping gear and sore muscles. My kids had a great time. Thanks, Mark. Trevor's gonna remember his 1st DNB experience forever because of you. Al, he's wearing his DNB cap to camp this week while the Giants' & Crabs' caps will just have to wait. See y'all in August,
Joe

Breathe in life & send it back out as praise. Burt, thanks for the east coast updates. Dan, thanks for posting 7/19's setlist & for the discs. Waaaay cool. Zion, d'ju post Cottage Grove? It must have been incredible to start a show with "Fable" & ride the wave for the rest of the night. By the way, I'm jealous you heard acoustic DNB (or was it just David!?!) My comments about "Roll" are too long for this format, so I'll wait a few seconds and sumbit again. Later,

So little time, lots to do...to get ready to go to Roll on the Mattole. DNB at 6Rivers was a blast. Some old favorites songs were played including Born Sidestepper. Mookie took us through the deep forest on Different World. Barry raised the roof several times throughout the night including long solos on Iko and Long Gone Sam. The night ended with Kerouac. David played and sounded great. Bill dropped a couple of bombs that rattled the rafters and made my uvula vibrate. Damn, I love these guys. Forgot to get the setlist. Hope someone will post results. Lots of folks showed up and a good time was had by all. Hoping to see Dan & Jan again at Dead on the Creek. Thanks Rosco for such a great honor. Gotta go...camping!!! Ain't life great.

Back again singing the praises of www.khum.com Last night, Gary played a cd from the 6/9/01 Portland Private Party. Thanks to Tim for making it happen. We heard Lonesome LA Cowboy thru Edge of the Wire. On 7/23 at 8-10 pm, we'll get Panama Red thru Box of Rain. Great mix & sound quality. Dynamite stuff. Speaking of the devil. I'm listening to the radio on this beautiful Tues pm & Gary's opening this set with "Kerouac." Whatasong. It's got such an anthemic quality much like "Touch of Grey." Whereas "Touch of Grey" sings of survival with its "I will get by," Kerouac's background chorus prods us to move forward to reach our goals. Laymon knows it's this first step that's the hardest step. Yet the first step is always where we must begin. Well, gotta stand up...& get back to work. Seeing the boys in a few day at 6Rivers. I'll let you know how it goes. Later,

Hey Phideaux; the crabs don't run sideways but there's a new rule about "no salted boiling water or melted butter" near the field. It just spooks the players a little too much and they can't concentrate on the game. Good to hear from you. Hope all is well. Regards to the queen of the castle.

Joe, my wife has come out of retirement and made tie-dyed uniforms for our 16 year-old daughter's softball team. The last batch just went into the dryer and they look stunning. She even dyed collared shirts for the coaches. Ain't baseball great? Do the Crabs have to run sideways?

More Life. More Death. First, the life: John Barlow says he's now a fan of String Cheese Incident & that we may be able to look forward to some potential collaborations. On the sad side; I heard Fred Neil passed away. He had a big influence on some of my favorites such as Stephen Stills, David Crosby & Gram Parsons. On the positive side again, my son Trevor was chosen to be batboy for tonight's Humboldt Crabs baseball game. Go Crabs go!

More prayers going out for George Harrison from Humboldt County. More, too, please for my Uncle Al (Klein) who just passed away on Sunday from cancer. We're very sad. His cancer was ID'd about 2 years ago and, following some chemo, he went into remission. Last week, following a check-up, the doc gave him about a week to live and he died right on schedule. In addition to being a good family man and having a good sense of humor, Al loved being punctual. It's too bad that sometimes it takes death and dying to put the important things in our lives like family, friends & good deeds, back into focus. Here's to refocusing on important things. Regards,
Joe

Everybody, please say a prayer for George Harrison. On top of everything else that has happened to him, he now has a brain tumor. As somebody who has known several people with these insidious growths in their heads, I can only say that while these things are not quite as rare as one would believe, they are definitely deadly. Bummed out Beatlewoman herself,

Whoops! I forgot the all important question of air velocity of a swallow in flight. It's been YEARS since I took physics. I suggest the formula is some sort of ratio of swallow's weight, speed of wings flapping, and wind resistance, coupled with outside temperature.
